Preparing Your Body for Lasting Recovery
What is Photobiomodulation?
Photobiomodulation (PBM), otherwise known as Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) and more colloquially known as Cold Laser Therapy, is a non-invasive light therapy that uses specific wavelengths of light to trigger a biological response at the cellular level in order to decrease pain and promote repair. Think of it as "photosynthesis for human cells." PBM effectively "jump starts" your cells: it stimulates your mitochondria (the power plants of your cells) to produce more energy (ATP) through activation of Cytochrome c Oxidase (CcO), an important photosensitive complex in the mitochondrial respiratory chain. PBM allows for facilitation of inflammation (a necessary process but one that also needs to be cleared out) in order to transition to repair. Additional mechanisms include increased blood flow, tissue oxygenation, and lymphatic drainage.
The Multi Radiance Difference: Super Pulsed vs. High Heat
What is Photobiomodulation?
Not all lasers are created equal. Many "High Power" lasers generate excessive heat, which can actually block light from reaching deep tissues.
- Deep Penetration: Research shows our Super Pulsed Laser transmits up to 6 times more light through deep structures (like the Achilles tendon) compared to high-powered continuous lasers.
- Safety & Comfort: Because we use "Super Pulses" measured in billionths of a second, we deliver therapeutic energy without the risk of burns or discomfort. In clinical trials, high-power lasers caused significant heat discomfort, while Multi Radiance remained cool and effective.
Evidence-Based Results
We don't just "mask" pain; we change the biological environment of your injury. Recent gold-standard studies (2025) have proven:
- Tennis Elbow Recovery: In a triple-blinded trial (BMJ Open), 72% of patients achieved significant pain reduction.
- Measurable Anti-Inflammatory Effect: Clinical data showed a 22% drop in TNF-α (a key inflammatory marker) and significant reductions in PGE2 (the chemical responsible for inflammatory pain).
- World-Class Quality: Out of nearly 50,000 clinical trials worldwide, only 61 have achieved a perfect 10/10 score for scientific rigor on the PEDro database. Nine of those perfect scores belong to Multi Radiance protocols.
Common Indications for Treatment
- Joint Pain: Hip, Knee, Ankle, Shoulder, Elbow, Wrist/Hand pain (including osteoarthritis).
- Spine: Chronic neck pain, Chronic low back pain.
- Tendinopathies: Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), Achilles tendonitis.
- Systemic Conditions: Fibromyalgia.
- Post-Surgery: Post-surgical pain and wound healing, Post-joint replacement recovery.
- Neuropathic Pain: Carpal tunnel syndrome, Nerve entrapment syndromes.
- Skin Conditions: Chronic non-healing wounds, Burns, Post-surgical wound healing.
- Performance: Muscle recovery, Enhancing strength gains.
Syntropy Light Lab
Our technician has been trained to administer photobiomodulation therapy under the supervision of Dr. Kurt Deschner, who is an interventional pain physician through the Revelstoke Pain Clinic and also the Medical Director at Revelation Psychedelic Therapy. Dr. Deschner sees all clients in consultation first, reviews investigations, performs a physical examination, and based on diagnosis and clinical context determines if PBM is the right treatment modality amongst the armamentarium of modalities that he has to offer to support clients in decreasing pain and improving function.
Clients will need to get a referral to Dr. Deschner at the Revelstoke Pain Clinic and if interested in pursuing PBM or getting more information, they can request that this be included on the referral request.
To correctly administer PBM therapy is not to just “shine a light”. It is important to consider the Biphasic Dose Response (Arndt-Schulz Law) which states that there is an “optimal” dose of light. Too little has no effect, but too much can actually inhibit healing or cause a flare in pain or be counterproductive. Therefore Dr. Deschner carefully designs a therapeutic PBM protocol, adjusting the dosage and timing as necessary and based on client response, in order to achieve optimized outcomes.
