What is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy?
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is an emerging therapy that addresses your mental health & well-being in a new way, using an evidence-based and research-backed approach. Each client’s treatment is unique and customised to them.
KAP involves the addition of small-doses of Ketamine, a common anaesthetic used in hospitals around the world, to allow for an individual to dissociate from their issues and approach resolving them in a new way aided by their therapist. This approach has been shown to be effective when dealing with chronic anxiety, post-traumatic-stress-disorder, certain substance use disorders, clinical depression, and other distressing experiences or challenges.
Why Use Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy?
If you feel like you have tried everything to find relief from your symptoms but have yet to find that relief, you are not the only one. Even after changes in lifestyle, medications, and various therapies, many people still find it difficult to establish lasting improvements in their health, their relationships, or in breaking their unhealthy habits. KAP serves as a therapeutic tool that will help you:
-
Access and process your emotions
-
Develop and shift into new ways of thinking & behaving
-
Gain insights into your own life, or help you to embody the life you want to be living
There is growing evidence that KAP helps with navigating experiences of past traumas, leads to a reduction in anxiety, and improves overall mood while leading to internal motivation to make lasting changes.
Current research is showing clients are likely to experience greater benefits when completing three consecutive KAP sessions. We ask that you commit to booking three KAP dates when you submit your application.
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy has been shown to benefit people struggling with:
-
Depression
-
Anxiety
-
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
-
Certain Substance Use Disorders
-
Suicidal Ideation
-
Processing Near-Death Experiences
What should I expect during a Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy session?
During a Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy session, you can expect to sit in a comfortable armchair with soft ambient lighting in the room. You may elevate your feet or recline in the chair to find the most comfortable position for you. You will hear gentle music in the background, and can expect to meet with your therapist and the administering physician both before and after your session. Your therapist will be with you the entire time, and will support you as you navigate your experience. You will also have pillows & blankets available during the session as well. Once completed, you will be offered food and beverages as you transition out of your experience.
How to Prepare for a Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy Session
Preparing for a Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) session is a vital step to ensure safety, comfort, and the deepest possible therapeutic benefit. The following guidelines will help you approach your session with clarity, intention, and respect for your personal beliefs and values.
1. Mental and Emotional Preparation
- Set Clear Intentions: Spend time reflecting on what you hope to achieve or explore during your session. Setting an intention—such as seeking insight, healing, or spiritual connection—can help guide your experience and maximize its benefits.
- Embrace an Open Mind: Approach the session with openness and curiosity. Being receptive to whatever arises can lead to deeper healing and personal growth.
- Discuss with Your Therapist: Prior to your session, you can meet with your therapist to review your mental health history and discuss any concerns. This helps create a personalized plan tailored to your needs.
2. Physical Preparation
- Rest Well: Ensure you get a good night’s sleep before your session. Being well-rested will help you feel more present and resilient during the experience.
- Eat Light: Avoid eating heavy meals for at least four hours before your appointment. Stay hydrated, but limit fluids shortly before your session to avoid discomfort.
- Dress Comfortably: Wear loose, comfortable clothing and warm socks to help you relax.
- Prepare Your Space: During your session, create a quiet, private, and comfortable environment. Use soft lighting, blankets, and pillows to foster a sense of safety and calm. Remove distractions, silence devices, and ensure you won’t be interrupted.
3. Spiritual Considerations
- Honor Your Spiritual Beliefs: If spirituality is significant in your life, consider bringing these elements into your preparation. Many individuals find that ketamine can facilitate profound spiritual experiences, such as a sense of unity, transcendence, or connection to a higher power.
- Reflect on Spiritual Intentions: You may wish to set an intention related to your spiritual journey—such as seeking deeper understanding, connection, or healing. Keeping spiritual symbols, texts, or objects nearby can help anchor your experience and provide comfort.
- Integration of Spiritual Insights: After your session, take time to reflect on any spiritual insights or experiences. Journaling, meditation, or discussing with a trusted therapist can help you integrate these experiences into your daily life.
4. Day-of Session Checklist
- Arrive on time to reduce time pressure.
- Bring a notepad or journal to record intentions and post-session reflections.
- Use relaxation techniques (such as deep breathing or meditation) beforehand to center yourself.
- Inform your therapist of any changes in your health, medications, or emotional state.
- Trust the process and know you are supported throughout your journey.
By preparing thoughtfully—mentally, physically, and spiritually—you create the best possible conditions for a safe, meaningful, and transformative ketamine-assisted psychotherapy experience.
Exclusions to Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy
There are certain conditions that may exclude you from undergoing KAP. These include a history of heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, symptoms of psychosis, or kidney disease. It is possible that Ketamine may increase your heart rate or blood pressure during your session, so it is essential that these conditions are controlled before proceeding with your session.
Currently Accepting Clients
We are currently accepting new clients for Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy. If you are interested in pursuing KAP, we encourage you to discuss it with your primary physician as well.
Traditional Uses of Psychedelic Assisted Therapy
Psychedelic Assisted Therapies are quickly being adopted by western culture and being embraced as powerful healing medicines, while Indigenous populations have long used psychoactive substances in traditional and spiritual or sacred ceremonies for thousands of years.
We would like to respectfully acknowledge the origin of these substances being used in a therapeutic setting, and pay homage to the roots of the practice.
We would also like to acknowledge and honour the four nations on whose traditional land we live: the Sinixt, the Ktunaxa, the Secwepmec, and the Syilx.
